Today marks the first day that anyone in America who is 18 years old or older can purchase Google Glass without a special invitation. Does this mean the beginning of science fiction-esque cyborgs roaming the streets? Probably not, at least not yet. Google Glass costs $1500, which means not everyone will be scrolling like mad to purchase one. Even those that may be able to afford the futuristic device may wish to take a second to think about the purchase, as it is bound to be shortly upgraded and updated, as is standard with any new technology.
Attacks against Glass Owners
With the advent of the Google Glass Explorers, those chosen to beta test the first round of the product available, many attacks against Glass owners ensued. In the San Francisco area, people were attacking and robbing those individuals who were sporting the mini-computer on their eyewear. Even when explorers weren’t the target of physical violence, many chose to shun and ridicule Glass owners. A new slur “glassholes” was even brought to life.
In order to combat the stigma surrounding Google Glass and Glass owners, Google altered the appearance of the newer versions of Glass, so that it will blend in with typical eyewear and not be quite so noticeable. Regardless of the hype and nay saying, Google Glass is sure to usher in the next era of tech gear. If you wish to be one of the first owners of the expensive new tech gear, it is wise to get it while you can, as Google has not announced how many are available, and despite the price and negativity, Glass is sure to sell out.
