Migraines affect about one in seven adults and are one of the top 20 causes of disability according to the World Health Organization. Migraine sufferers have had medications and home remedies to choose from in the past to provide some degree of relief, but now they have another alternative. Created by Cefaly Technology, a small company out of southern Belgium, the battery powered headband releases electrical currents to facial nerves. These currents help to soothe nerves and mitigate the pain experienced from migraine headaches. The headband does not actually cure the migraine, but using it can help to prevent the migraine from worsening and can help to stop a pattern of chronic migraines from developing.
FDA Approval Effect on Sales
The company is very excited about the FDA approval, which just came through in March. The headband has already been available in Europe, and will now be available with a prescription in the United States. The product is the first prescription non-medicinal migraine treatment to be available for U.S. citizens. The company estimates that sales will escalate at least 25 percent over the next five years with the FDA approval, and that about 10,000 units a month will be sold in the United States.
The release of the migraine headband to the U.S. market comes at a time when more medical experts are turning to non-medicinal approaches to relieve headaches other conditions. American consumers are also looking for alternative treatments to avoid the list of side effects that comes with most drugs. Cefaky Technology has also announced that it will continue research and work to improve its product to provide even more effective relief of migraine headaches.
